CURLO EXPERIMENT

CURLO EXPERIMENT

Cloud-based Simulation of Page Curling from Straight Images and Correction using Neural Networks

THE CHALLENGE
Digitization of books is an important process, both for commercialization and for preservation of older texts. The Bookscanner© product can automatically and physically turn pages and automate the scanning process. However, this process results in a ‘page curling’ effect where the pages are attached to the spine. The scanned pages need to be digitally flattened, a tedious and expensive process that this experiment aimed at improving and commercializing.

THE EXPERIMENT (PART OF FORTISSIMO II PROJECT)

CURLO aimed at the removal of page curling artifact that is introduced to images because of the physical properties of the books.

OUR ROLE

Our VDP was used for new product development, and we were involved in:

– the provision of technical requirements of the CURLO PoC.

– the specification for the integration with the High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure back-end.

– the set up of the required databases

– the development of the CURLO PoC

– the integration with the FORTISSIMO Marketplace

Experiment under Fortissimo II project, through the use of simulation services running on a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cloud infrastructure.

Funding Entity: European Union
Programme: Seventh Framework Programme / Horizon 2020
Grant Agreements No:  609029 / 680481
Experiment Start Date: November 2016
